Knightdale is conveniently located next to Interstates 540 and 495. It is a short drive to downtown Raleigh and is easy to get to from Research Triangle Park, Raleigh Durham International Airport, Durham and Chapel Hill.
History of Knightdale
The town was incorporated in 1927 having grown from a crossroads with just a post office catering to the local farmers. The railroad came in 1904 and facilitated more growth as the railroad company built homes for it’s workers. Small businesses began to open along First Street to cater to the growing population. After World War II the baby boomers arrived and made Knightdale their home and more infrastructure meant the town could add neighborhoods and retail stores.
Shopping in Knightdale
There have been a lot of retail stores that recently opened along Knightdale Boulevard, HWY 64 from big box stores to smaller speciality stores. Restaurants, service providers, medical and home improvement stores are all available now for residents of Knightdale. Located near the town are some of the largest shopping malls in the Triangle. The Triangle Town Center is ten miles away off I540 with many different stores and restaurants. Crabtree Valley Mall is 15 miles from town and is one of the most popular shopping malls in the Triangle. In Smithfield a little over 30 minutes drive are the Carolina Premium Outlets. Supermarkets in Knightdale currently are Lowe’s Foods, Food Lion, Aldi and Wal Mart.
The public schools in Knightdale are administered by the Wake County Public School System They offer three different school calendars that start in early July for year round schools, late July for modified calendar schools and late August for traditional calendar schools. New residents are assigned to a base school which is found by going to their website and entering the address of your new home. It is recommended that if you are buying a house in Knightdale and have school age children to check what public schools are available. There are a number of charter and private schools both in Knightdale and Raleigh.
Known throughout the country for its excellent colleges and universities the Triangle of North Carolina of which Knightdale is a part has some great places of higher learning. Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are bith less than an hours drive from Knightdale. North Carolina State, Shaw University, Meredith College and Campbell Law School are about 20 mins drive.
